Most PDF bloat comes from embedded photos and scans. The Recommended and Strong levels find those images, downscale any that are larger than needed, re-encode them as efficient JPEGs, and rebuild the file structure. Text, vector drawings and links are untouched. Extreme mode instead renders each page to a single image, which produces very small files but removes selectable text.

If a PDF contains mostly text and vector graphics, there is little to compress; it is already small per page. Files that were produced by another compressor are also near their minimum. Try the Extreme level if size matters more than selectable text.

At the Recommended level images are capped at roughly 150 dpi on the page, which prints cleanly on home and office printers. Choose Lossless if you need the original image data untouched, or Strong and Extreme when the file is only going to be viewed on screen.
